Official: AC Milan part ways with Gennaro Gattuso

Serie A giants AC Milan have this evening confirmed that manager Gennaro Gattuso has departed the club by mutual consent.

Rossoneri stint

Former Milan midfielder Gattuso took the reins at the San Siro in November of 2017, on the back of Vincenzo Montella’s sacking.

After a rocky start to his stint in charge of the Diavolo, the Italian tactician soon steadied the ship, before guiding Milan on a remarkable run of 10 wins and 3 draws across 13 outings between the end of December and March.

This streak subsequently saw Gattuso rewarded in April of last year, when he was handed a new contract until the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

As such, the goal for Gattuso and the Rossoneri this past season, amid a period of rebuilding at the club, was to secure a top-4 spot, and Champions League qualification.

And, on the back of the arrivals of the likes of Tiemoue Bakayoko, Mattia Caldara and Gonazlo Higuain last summer, spirits were high heading into the campaign.

In the end, though, despite a solid points-haul of 68, Milan’s most since 2013, the giants of Italian football missed out on Serie A’s top-4 in agonizing circumstances.

A run of 4 straight wins to close out the campaign was not enough, as both Atalanta and Inter Milan secured final-day victories of their own to finish a solitary point clear of Gattuso’s men.

Gattuso departs

As such, on the back of mounting rumours surrounding his future over the last 48 hours, Milan have this evening officially announced Gattuso’s departure by mutual consent:

A statement on the Diavolo’s website regarding the situation reads as follows:

‘AC Milan announces Gennaro Gattuso will leave his role as the Club’s First Team manager by mutual agreement with immediate effect.’

‘The Club will now conduct a recruitment process for a new full-time Manager for the First Team, ahead of the ICC summer tour and the first seasonal matches of the 2019/20 domestic championship, the domestic cup and the UEFA Europa League.’

‘AC Milan wishes to thank Gennaro Gattuso for his leadership during the last eighteen months. A true legend of the Rossoneri, Gennaro stepped into the role during what was a difficult period for the Club and has performed admirably, securing the Club’s highest League points total since 2012/13.’

‘AC Milan must now look to the future, whilst ensuring continuity, financial stability and sustainable growth.’

Gattuso’s decision to mutually terminate his contract is also hugely-significant for Milan.

As per Football-Italia:

‘The Coach had a contract until June 2021, so could have continued taking on the wages or demanded a considerable pay-off to terminate the deal early.’

‘Instead, it’s widely reported Gattuso has shown his love for the club and above all his staff by deciding to forego a sum close to €11m gross in exchange for his collaborators receiving all the money they were owed.’

‘That works out to €4m gross for the remaining two years of the deal.’

Leonardo exit

Gattuso’s departure is not the only key one from the San Siro today, though.

The Milanese giants have also confirmed that sporting director Leonardo has stepped down from his position:
