Petr Cech suggests there is not enough ‘pressure’ at Arsenal compared to Chelsea

Petr Cech has this afternoon highlighted a key difference between the overall mindset at Arsenal, and that at his former club Chelsea, ahead of the Europa League final.

Arsenal vs Chelsea

Unai Emery’s men are set to go head-to-head with London rivals Chelsea in the first of two all-English European showpiece matchups tomorrow night.

Arsenal booked their spot in the Europa League finale courtesy of a stellar 7-3 aggregate semi-final victory over Valencia, which came on the back of an equally-impressive ousting of Serie A giants Napoli in the competition’s last-8.

A win in Baku tomorrow night would mark the first piece of silverware for the Gunners in the Unai Emery-era.

Perhaps more importantly, though, securing the Europa League crown would also ensure Arsenal’s place in next season’s Champions League group stage.

‘Not enough pressure’

Tomorrow’s showpiece, meanwhile, will also mark a particularly-special occasion for one of the north Londoners’ stars.

The player in question is Petr Cech.

Veteran goalkeeper Cech is set to call time on his legendary career this summer, meaning the Europa League final will come as his last professional outing.

In addition, making the matchup an even more noteworthy one is the fact that the 37-year-old will be facing off against his former club, Chelsea.

As such, speaking in an interview with the Evening Standard earlier today, Cech was inevitably drawn on tomorrow night’s clash, with the 124-time capped Czech international having provided a fascinating insight into the difference in ‘pressure’ felt by the players at Arsenal and Chelsea.

Citing Arsene Wenger’s influence on his current side, Cech suggested that a lack of pressure to win on a weekly basis may be holding the Gunners back, as opposed to Chelsea, where there is ‘pressure every game’:

‘It will sound strange but I think generally at Arsenal there is not enough pressure.’

‘Arsene is a real gentleman. As much as he hates losing, he stays a gentleman. If you lose, you win, you lose, you win, he kind of carries on. That’s something I’ve never experienced before.’

‘At Chelsea, at the times when we drew, it felt like a funeral in the dressing room. It was so bad. If we drew against a big team at home, it was like, ‘Oh no, it is impossible we didn’t win at home’. It came from everywhere: the players, the coach. Since the start when I was there, the pressure was there every game.’
