Real Madrid release bizarre statement in response to Mauricio Pochettino’s CL final accommodation joke

Spanish giants Real Madrid have this afternoon released a surprising statement, after seemingly misreading Spurs’ boss Mauricio Pochettino’s lighthearted claim regarding his squad’s sleeping arrangements ahead of the Champions League final.

‘Can only sleep there when I become the coach of Real Madrid’

Pochettino’s men are set to go head-to-head with Liverpool at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium next weekend.

The clash, the biggest in Tottenham’s history, will come as the 2nd all-English European club final in the space of 3 days, with Arsenal and Chelsea also set to face off for the Europa League crown on Wednesday.

As such, ahead of his side’s final outing of the campaign, Mauricio Pochettino and the Tottenham squad have already made their way to Madrid.

In a bid to maintain their sharpness following a lengthy break from competitive action, the north Londoners are currently training at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training complex.

Spurs’ stars then return to a hotel close to the training ground to sleep.

Speaking in an interview this afternoon, though, Mauricio Pochettino suggested that he would rather his squad not have to depart the Blancos’ complex at night.

The Argentine continued by jokingly claiming that Real president Florentino Perez informed him that the only way he would be allowed to sleep at Valdebebas was if he agreed to become the manager of the Bernabeu powerhouse.

Speaking in an interview with Spanish outlet El Partidazo de Cope, Pochettino explained:

‘Ahead of the final, we will train at Valdebebas and sleep in a nearby hotel.’

He continued:

‘I asked Florentino [Perez, Real’s president] to let us sleep in the sports centre. But he told me that I can only sleep there when I become the coach of Real Madrid.’

‘Completely false’

Florentino Perez himself, though, clearly didn’t see the funny side of Pochettino’s statement.

This is showcased by the fact that Real have since released an official statement, firmly denying the Spurs boss’ remarks:

‘Real Madrid CF are surprised by the statement made by the coach of Tottenham Hotspur, Mauricio Pochettino, about a supposed request made to our club for his team to stay in the residence at Real Madrid City on the occasion of the Champions League final.’
‘Real Madrid CF wants to make it clear that it is completely false that this request has been made. Our club has always shown its absolute availability to meet all the requests made by UEFA, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Club Atlético de Madrid, Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur.’
‘All requests submitted to Real Madrid have referred solely and exclusively to the use of the training pitches at Real Madrid City and the changing rooms. And all of them have been granted by our club.’
