Former Arsenal star Jose Antonio Reyes killed in car accident

Heartbreaking news that former Spanish international Jose Antonio Reyes has passed away following a car crash has this afternoon been confirmed.

Arsenal stint

Reyes, who lined out for the likes of Sevilla, Real and Atletico Madrid over the course of his career, is most-fondly remembered in England for his time spent with Arsenal.

The gifted attacking midfielder/winger lined out for the Gunners from 2004 to 2007, and was part of the club’s storied Premier League title-winning Invincibles squad.

Reyes was held in high regard in north London, with his technical abilities and Spanish flair having seen the Andalusian native, after a tough start to life at Arsenal, eventually go on to fit seamlessly into the free-flowing football employed by Arsene Wenger.

Reyes’ late career

After departing the English capital for Real Madrid for the 2006/07 campaign, Reyes subsequently joined Atletico on a permanent transfer the following summer, before stints with the likes of Sevilla, Espanyol and Benfica.

In fact, the veteran was still plying his trade in the Spanish second division up until this summer, with Extremadura.

Reyes passes away

As mentioned above, however, shocking news regarding Reyes has this afternoon emerged online.

The Spaniard, aged just 35, was killed in a car crash earlier today.

Reyes’ former club Sevilla confirmed the news a short time ago, revealing:

‘We couldn’t be confirming worse news. Beloved Sevilla star José Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic collision. Rest in peace.’
