Lionel Messi provides update on international future/chances of playing at 2022 World Cup

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi last night opened up on his plans moving forward with the Argentine national team.

Copa America

Lionel Scaloni’s side are set to return to competitive action in two weeks’ time, when this summer’s Copa America gets underway in Brazil.

The tournament, which sees South American football’s finest go head-to-head, will be spread across dates between the 14th of June and 7th of July, in 5 host cities.

Argentina are currently ranked as 2nd-favourites with the bookies to clinch Copa glory.

The Albiceleste will of course be hoping to go one step further this time out than they managed in both 2015 and 2016, having been put to the sword by Chile in the competition’s finale two years running.

‘Let opportunities pass by’

After a brief spell during which he made himself unavailable for selection for his country, talisman, captain and all-time leading Argentina goalscorer Lionel Messi has returned to Lionel Scaloni’s squad for the tournament:

And, speaking in an interview with Fox Sports Argentina last night, the Barcelona attacker went on to reveal just how much securing an international title before the end of his illustrious career would mean:

‘I want to finish my career having won something with the Argentine national team, or if not having tried as many times as possible.’

‘I do not want to be left with the feeling that it did not happen and I let opportunities pass by.’

On the possibility of lining out for the Albiceleste at the 2022 World Cup, meanwhile, Messi added:

‘I do not know if I will reach the World Cup in Qatar. God will decide whether it is given to me or not.’

‘Today I feel great, very well physically, but I’m [almost] 32 years old and I don’t know how it’s going to go.’

‘A lot of things can happen. I hope I don’t have any serious injuries.’
