Chelsea readying new contract for Fikayo Tomori – Standard

As per a report from Simon Johnson of the Evening Standard, Premier League giants Chelsea are set to open contract talks with youngster Fikayo Tomori imminently.

Blues’ prodigy

Tomori, a 21-year-old central-defender, came up through the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge, after initially joining Chelsea in 2005.

The last couple of years, meanwhile, have seen the stopper begin to showcase his talents as one of the Blues’ most highly-regarded young talents.

Having initially broken into the first-team picture of the capital giants for the first time in 2016, Tomori has since unsurprisingly found regular game-time hard to come by.

This has resulted in the English U21 international being sent out on a series of loan spells.

The latest of these came in the Championship last season, with Derby County.

Tomori played an absolutely integral role in the backline of then Rams’ boss Frank Lampard, as the Pride Park outfit missed out on a return to the Premier League at the final hurdle in the playoff final.

All told, the Canada-born starlet managed an impressive 55 appearances across all competitions.

Chelsea contract talks

Tomori has since, meanwhile, gone on to return to Stamford Bridge this summer.

It was previously suggested that the Blues could look to loan the 21-year-old out again, though, in a bid to secure him a consistent starting berth for the coming season.

David Luiz’s abrupt Chelsea departure yesterday, however, looks to have changed this stance.

Tomori now stands as Frank Lampard’s 4th-choice centre-half, behind Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma. As such, the gifted stopper could well see some meaningful minutes on the pitch over the coming months.

And Tomori’s growing importance to the Pensioners’ cause looks set to see him rewarded imminently.

As per the aforementioned report from Simon Johnson of the Evening Standard, Chelsea have contract talks planned for the starlet, with his current deal due to expire in 2021:
