Liverpool consider Andy Lonergan addition amid likely ‘4 to 8 weeks’ without Alisson

Reports in the English media this evening suggest that Liverpool are ready to offer a contract to free agent goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, on the back of the injury picked up by Alisson versus Norwich.

Liverpool cruise

Jurgen Klopp’s men welcomed the Canaries to Anfield last night, for the respective sides’ opening outing of the Premier League season.

The hosts of course head into the campaign hoping to go one better than they managed in 2018/19, having been pipped to the English top-flight by Manchester City.

And their title hopes got off to an ideal start, with Liverpool having eventually run out 4-1 winners versus Norwich.

A blistering opening 45 minutes, during which an early own goal was added to by Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Divock Origi, saw the Merseysiders take a commanding 4-goal lead into the interval.

Teemu Pukki did manage to restore some semblance of respectability to the scoreline with the visitors’ opening goal of the season just past the hour mark, but the damage had long been done.

Alisson crocked

An otherwise-positive opening to the new campaign for Liverpool, however, was soured considerably by an Alisson-shaped blow on the injury-front.

After slipping whilst taking a goal-kick shortly before the interval, the Brazilian could immediately be seen to be in clear discomfort.

This eventually resulted in Alisson being escorted off the pitch by Liverpool’s medical team, with debutant Adrian having replaced the Reds’ no.1 between the posts.

Lonergan to Liverpool?

Early reports, meanwhile, suggest that Liverpool look set to be without their first-choice shot-stopper for somewhere between 4 and 8 weeks.

And, according to the likes of James Pearce and David Lynch of the Evening Standard, this looks set to see the Reds imminently dip into the free agent pool for goalkeeping reinforcements.

Andy Lonergan, most-recently of Rochdale (on loan from Middlesbrough), trained with Liverpool throughout the summer.

And the Irish veteran could now be set to link back up with Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Lonergan is likely to be brought in on a short-term deal, to act as a temporary backup to Adrian.
