Mesut Ozil & Sead Kolasinac: Arsenal stars targeted in gang war & they could miss the Burnley match

Security threats against Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil & Sead Kolasinac

A fuller picture is starting to develop over the recent threats to Arsenal stars Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac.

Neither Ozil nor Kolasinac played any party in Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Newcastle on Sunday.

That’s after both footballers were given time off following security threats.

On Monday in the Times, reporter Nadeem Badshah has delved into the background of what’s been happening to Ozil and Kolasinac away from the pitch.

On Sunday, police confirmed that two men were arrested outside Mesut Ozil’s house on Thursday night.

The BBC named the two men arrested as “Mr Ercan and Mr Ekinci, both 27”.

Today, the Times also reveal that “incidents were also reported outside Kolasinac’s home, also in north London.”

How the car-jacking attempt has lead to gang warfare

A few weeks ago, video revealed that Arsenal’s Ozil and Sead Kolasinac were targetted in an attempted car-jacking.

Two men with knives confronted the Arsenal footballers.

Incredibly, Kolasinac managed to single-handedly prevent those men from doing any damage, as the Bosnian defended himself and Ozil.

Today, the Times confirm that the current threats to Ozil and Kolasinac stemmed from that car-jacking incident, with the footballers now embroiled in a fight between rival gangs:

Police said that they had received “credible threats” and the decision not to play them because of this is believed to be unprecedented in English football.

Last month the players were the victims of a carjacking attempt by an armed gang on mopeds.

Unknown to the footballers, eastern European gangsters are believed to have warned against any future attacks on the pair. This has led to an escalation of threats by a rival gang.

Arsenal vs Burnley

Next weekend, Arsenal kick off round two of the Premier League with a home match against Burnley on Saturday lunchtime.

Unai Emery has confirmed that Ozil and Kolasinac may also miss the upcoming Burnley game.

Speaking after winning at Newcastle, Emery said:

The welfare of our players and their families is always a top priority and we have taken this decision following discussion with the players.
