Paul Merson slams Man United’s ‘ridiculous’ Harry Maguire deal ahead of Chelsea

Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal star Paul Merson has called into serious question the wisdom of Manchester United, in splashing out such a hefty fee on Harry Maguire.

Maguire’s United switch

On the back of months of rampant speculation, the Red Devils finally confirmed the signing of powerhouse stopper Maguire from Leicester City earlier this week.

The English international’s addition was long-viewed as an essential piece of business on the part of the Old Trafford hierarchy, with the long-term injury picked up by Eric Bailly having no doubt sped up negotiations on United’s part.

While it has since been largely-agreed upon that Maguire will no doubt fill a gaping leader’s hole at the heart of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s back-line, though, many have taken serious issue with the fee forked over by the Manchester giants.

The 26-year-old set United back a whopping £80 million, a world-record sum for a defender.

‘Ridiculous’

And one individual who is in no two minds regarding the suggestion that Ed Woodward and co. overpaid for Maguire is Paul Merson.

When drawn on the subject of the Red Devils’ work on the transfer front on Sky Sports, former Arsenal standout Merson claimed that he ‘didn’t see any good business’ done at Old Trafford this summer.

The 51-year-old went on to label the Maguire fee as ‘ridiculous’, before questioning whether the now-former Leicester man will be capable of living up to expectations in Manchester:
