Why VAR didn’t penalise Liverpool’s Adrian for coming off his line vs Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham

Adrian: Liverpool’s hero vs Chelsea

A fortnight ago, Adrian was unemployed.

On Wednesday night in Istanbul, the former West Ham keeper became a Liverpool hero.

Adrian, who has been drafted into Liverpool’s XI after Alisson’s injury against Norwich, saved a crucial penalty in the UEFA Super Cup to defeat Chelsea.

The match finished 2-2 after extra time.

Olivier Giroud’s opener was canceled out by Sadio Mane in the 90 minutes.

Mane put Liverpool ahead before a Jorginho penalty took the showpiece to spot-kicks.

Why VAR didn’t penalise Adrian vs Tammy Abraham

Tammy Abraham was the fall-guy in the shootout.

The Chelsea striker saw his effort saved by Adrian.

However, it was plain to see that Adrian was stood off his line when Abraham took his penalty.

VAR was active in the game, but the officials didn’t call for the spot-kick to be retaken.

Why not?

As confirmed by ESPN’s Dale Johnson, there’s been a change to the laws regarding VAR and penalties.

Premier League vs Bundesliga

Dale Johnson has also tried to clarify how VAR will be applied in the Premier League and Bundesliga with regard to this penalty issue.

What Adrian said about coming off his line

After the game, Adrian discussed how he saved Abraham’s penalty:

It is really difficult to be on the line because we need a step forward to push but in the end we need to wait until he strikes.

I knew his [Abraham’s] strong side is my left, so I tried to go there and save with my right foot.
