Steve Bruce provides injury updates on four Newcastle players before Liverpool

Liverpool vs Newcastle

Newcastle will travel to Liverpool on Saturday in the early Premier League kick-off.

The Magpies would lose their opening two league games under Steve Bruce but their form has since improved.

Newcastle have picked up four points in their last two games, beating Tottenham and drawing with Watford.

However, they must face a Liverpool side who, firstly went unbeaten at Anfield in the league last campaign and who are also the only side in the PL to have won their opening four games.

Bruce on Longstaff

Ahead of the clash with Liverpool, Steve Bruce has on Friday provided an injury update on four of his players.

Unfortunately for Newcastle, Bruce would state on Friday that Sean Longstaff will not be available on Saturday after turning an ankle in training:

“Unfortunately Sean Longstaff turned an ankle in training so won’t be in contention for Saturday. It’s one of those freak injuries. We won’t know how severe it is for a couple of days.”

Bruce on Carroll, Saint-Maximin & Ritchie

Bruce also gave updates on both Andy Carroll and Allan Saint-Maximin, stating it is still a bit early for that duo:

“It’s still a bit early for Andy Carroll and Allan Saint-Maximin, but they’ve made big progress this week.

“Andy’s away to see a specialist this afternoon. Touch wood, he’s delighted with how it’s gone so far. With Allan, we’re erring on the side of caution.”

Finally, the Newcastle boss spoke about Matt Ritchie and said he doesn’t think the midfielder is too far away:

“Matt Ritchie’s been quite remarkable in his recovery – he’s shocked us all.

“We weren’t expecting to see him for a couple of months, but with the way he’s trained yesterday and the day before – as long as there’s no reaction – I don’t think he’s too far away.”
